Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Raisintree (Hovenia dulcis) has a history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it has been employed for a variety of health concerns, including liver disorders, alcohol intoxication, and some skin conditions such as dermatitis. The bark, seeds, and fruit have been used in decoctions or topical preparations, with indications that suggest anti-inflammatory and detoxifying properties according to ancient pharmacopeias and herbalist texts. However, direct evidence for its efficacy in dermatitis specifically is largely anecdotal or based on traditional formulations rather than controlled clinical trials.

Modern scientific studies on Hovenia dulcis have primarily focused on its hepatoprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects, with a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting the presence of bioactive compounds (like flavonoids) that could theoretically support skin health by reducing inflammation. Nonetheless, there is a lack of robust, peer-reviewed clinical research specifically addressing its effectiveness for dermatitis in humans. As such, its use for dermatitis is justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation, and current evidence is limited to traditional usage and some preliminary pharmacological studies.
