Carotenoids, such as beta-carotene, lutein, and lycopene, are naturally occurring pigments found in plants, known for their antioxidant properties. There is some scientific evidence suggesting a potential beneficial role of carotenoids in skin health, including the management of inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis. Carotenoids can help protect the skin from oxidative stress, which is implicated in the pathogenesis of dermatitis, particularly atopic dermatitis. A few small clinical studies and animal models have demonstrated that carotenoid supplementation may reduce skin inflammation and improve some clinical symptoms of dermatitis. For example, studies have shown that higher intake of carotenoids is associated with lower risk and severity of atopic dermatitis in children and adults. Furthermore, carotenoids may modulate immune responses, reducing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, the clinical evidence is limited, with most studies being observational, small in scale, or conducted in animals. There is a lack of large, randomized controlled trials directly evaluating the efficacy of carotenoids as a treatment for dermatitis. As a result, while the use of carotenoids for dermatitis is supported by some scientific rationale and early findings, the strength of evidence is low, and carotenoids are not currently recommended as a stand-alone or primary treatment for dermatitis. More robust clinical research is needed to confirm their therapeutic role.
