Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Bombax (commonly known as silk cotton tree, genus Bombax) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and some folk remedies in Asia. Its bark, flowers, and roots have been utilized for various skin ailments, including dermatitis, due to their purported anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. However, this use is largely based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation. There are few, if any, well-designed modern clinical studies directly examining Bombax species for the treatment of dermatitis in humans. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated the presence of bioactive compounds with potential anti-inflammatory or antioxidant effects, but these findings are preliminary and not specific to dermatitis. Thus, while Bombax is used in some traditional practices for skin conditions, the overall evidence supporting its efficacy for dermatitis is weak and based mainly on historical or anecdotal reports rather than scientific data.
