Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bisabolene is a sesquiterpene compound found in various essential oils, most notably in chamomile and certain other plants. Its relevance to dermatitis is primarily linked to its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which have been demonstrated in preclinical studies. Several in vitro and animal studies suggest that bisabolene and related compounds (such as α-bisabolol) can reduce inflammation and inhibit the growth of skin pathogens, both of which are beneficial in conditions like dermatitis.

However, direct clinical evidence in humans specifically evaluating bisabolene for the treatment or support of dermatitis is currently limited. Most available data are either extrapolated from studies on bisabolol, or from experimental models not directly involving human dermatitis. In addition, bisabolene is often a minor component in essential oils used for skin care, making it difficult to isolate its specific effects.

In summary, the use of bisabolene for dermatitis is supported by some scientific rationale and preclinical data, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis for its use, the strength of evidence is modest at present.
