Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Arisaema (commonly known as Jack-in-the-pulpit or by its genus name in traditional medicine texts) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and some other ethnobotanical systems primarily for respiratory conditions, swelling, and certain skin ailments. In TCM, processed Arisaema (often as "Arisaema cum Bile" or prepared tuber) has been included in formulations aimed at treating skin conditions such as sores, ulcers, and occasionally dermatitis, usually attributed to its purported ability to "resolve phlegm" and reduce swelling or toxicity. However, direct historical evidence for its specific use in dermatitis is limited and often generalized under broader categories of "skin eruptions" or "inflammatory skin diseases." There is little to no high-quality modern scientific evidence to support the efficacy or safety of Arisaema for dermatitis. Furthermore, raw Arisaema tubers are known to be toxic and require careful processing to avoid adverse effects, including severe skin irritation and mucosal damage. Thus, while there is a tradition of use in some systems for skin conditions, the evidence is weak, and there is a lack of scientific studies validating its effectiveness for dermatitis specifically.
