Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Aloe vera has a long history of traditional use for various skin conditions, including dermatitis, but its modern application for this purpose is supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence. Several studies have investigated the effects of Aloe vera gel on dermatitis, particularly atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. Aloe vera contains compounds such as polysaccharides, glycoproteins, and acemannan, which are believed to contribute to its anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, and wound-healing properties.

Clinical trials and experimental studies have shown that topical application of Aloe vera gel can reduce skin inflammation, promote healing, and alleviate symptoms such as itching and redness associated with dermatitis. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Phytotherapy Research (2003) found that Aloe vera cream was more effective than placebo in reducing the severity of atopic dermatitis. Another study in Journal of Dermatological Treatment (2012) demonstrated that Aloe vera gel could improve symptoms of contact dermatitis.

However, while these findings are promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence are moderate, with some studies showing only modest benefits or methodological limitations. As such, Aloe vera is considered a complementary option for managing dermatitis symptoms, rather than a primary or standalone treatment.
