Terpenoids, a diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from terpenes, are present in many medicinal plants and have been studied for their potential role in supporting or treating depression. Scientific interest in terpenoids largely stems from their presence in essential oils and traditional herbal remedies that are reputed to have mood-enhancing properties. Several preclinical studies (mainly in vitro and animal models) have indicated that specific terpenoids—such as linalool (found in lavender), limonene (found in citrus), and β-caryophyllene (found in black pepper and cannabis)—may exert anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects. These effects are hypothesized to result from modulation of neurotransmitter systems (e.g., serotonin and dopamine), anti-inflammatory actions, and interactions with the endocannabinoid system. However, while there is a growing body of mechanistic and animal research, high-quality human clinical trials remain limited and results are sometimes inconsistent. Some small-scale clinical studies have suggested modest benefits of terpenoid-rich essential oils (notably lavender) in improving mood and reducing symptoms of depression or anxiety, but these are not universally replicated and often involve complex mixtures rather than isolated terpenoids. Thus, while the scientific rationale is plausible and there is preliminary evidence, the overall quality and quantity of clinical data supporting terpenoids for depression are relatively modest at this time, justifying a rating of 2 out of 5.
