Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Orange essential oil has some scientific evidence supporting its use for alleviating symptoms of depression, although the strength of this evidence is modest. Several small-scale clinical studies and animal experiments suggest that inhalation of orange essential oil may have positive effects on mood and anxiety, which are often comorbid with depression. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the journal Advanced Biomedical Research (2013) showed that patients exposed to orange essential oil experienced reduced anxiety and improved mood compared to controls. Another study in Progress in Neuro-Psychopharmacology & Biological Psychiatry (2005) found that inhaling orange oil reduced symptoms of anxiety in humans undergoing dental procedures.

The proposed mechanisms for these effects include the modulation of the limbic system in the brain, particularly affecting neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. Limonene, a major component of orange essential oil, has also been studied for its potential anti-anxiety and antidepressant-like effects in animal models.

However, it is important to note that while these findings are promising, the body of evidence is still limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and a lack of large, well-controlled trials specifically focused on depression. Therefore, orange essential oil may be considered as an adjunctive therapy for mood improvement, but it should not replace standard treatments for depression.
