Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable native to the Andes in Peru and has been used traditionally for centuries to enhance stamina, fertility, and general well-being. In traditional medicine, especially among indigenous Andean populations, maca has also been employed as a natural remedy to improve mood and alleviate symptoms that may be associated with depression, such as fatigue and lack of motivation. The rationale stems from its adaptogenic properties, with the belief that it helps the body better cope with stress and emotional imbalances.

Scientific investigation into maca’s effects on depression is limited but growing. A small number of animal studies and preliminary human trials suggest that maca may influence mood by modulating hormone levels or supporting neurotransmitter balance, possibly reducing symptoms of depression, especially in specific populations like postmenopausal women. For example, a 2008 double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that maca improved psychological symptoms, including depression, in postmenopausal women. However, these studies are limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and methodological weaknesses.

Overall, the primary justification for using maca to support or treat depression is rooted in tradition, with modest supporting evidence from early-stage scientific research. More robust, large-scale clinical trials are required before maca can be recommended based on strong scientific validation.
