Albizia lebbeck, commonly known as Lebbek, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of conditions, including mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. Traditional texts cite the use of Lebbek bark and seeds for calming the mind and alleviating symptoms of stress or low mood. However, the evidence supporting these uses is primarily anecdotal and based on historical practice rather than rigorous scientific studies. There are a few preclinical studies indicating that extracts from Albizia lebbeck may have neuroprotective and anxiolytic effects in animal models, which could be relevant to depression, but these findings are preliminary and not sufficient for drawing firm conclusions. No large-scale, controlled clinical trials have directly evaluated Lebbek’s efficacy for depression in humans. Therefore, while there is some support from traditional systems of medicine and limited preclinical research, robust scientific validation is lacking.
