Evidence supporting the use of: Kokilaksha
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Kokilaksha (Asteracantha longifolia or Hygrophila auriculata) is a well-known herb in Ayurveda, primarily recognized for its use in managing kidney disorders, liver ailments, and as an aphrodisiac or general tonic. Traditional Ayurvedic texts do not specifically identify Kokilaksha as a treatment for depression or mood disorders. However, certain Ayurvedic formulations containing Kokilaksha are sometimes used for promoting overall wellness and balancing doshas, which may have indirect effects on mood and mental health according to traditional concepts.
There is very limited scientific literature directly linking Kokilaksha to antidepressant activity. Some preclinical studies suggest that extracts of Hygrophila auriculata may have adaptogenic and neuroprotective effects, but these findings are preliminary and have not been robustly linked to clinical antidepressant outcomes. No high-quality human clinical trials have been published to validate its efficacy specifically for depression.
In summary, Kokilaksha’s use for depression is based on traditional knowledge and general wellness principles rather than direct, evidence-based support. The evidence rating is low due to the lack of targeted historical or scientific validation for this specific indication.
