Its use for depression is primarily rooted in these traditional contexts, where frankincense was believed to calm the mind, elevate mood, and support spiritual well-being during rituals and meditation. The aromatic smoke or essential oil was commonly used for its purported soothing properties.
Scientific research on frankincense for depression is limited but exists primarily in animal studies and preliminary human investigations. Some studies suggest that certain compounds in frankincense, such as incensole acetate, may have anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects in mice, potentially by affecting brain signaling pathways related to mood regulation (e.g., TRPV3 channels). However, robust, large-scale clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the available evidence does not meet the standards required for strong scientific validation.
