Curcuma, most commonly referring to Curcuma longa (turmeric), has been used traditionally in various cultures, particularly in South Asian medicine, for a range of ailments, including mood disorders. In recent years, scientific interest has grown regarding its potential antidepressant effects, largely attributed to its main active compound, curcumin. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated curcumin supplementation in individuals with major depressive disorder and depressive symptoms. These studies generally report modest but statistically significant improvements in depressive symptoms compared to placebo. Proposed mechanisms include curcumin’s anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, as well as its potential to modulate neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. However, the quality of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short study durations, and issues with curcumin's bioavailability. Larger and longer-term studies are needed to draw firm conclusions, but current scientific evidence does suggest that Curcuma (specifically curcumin) may have a supportive role as an adjunct in the management of depression. This evidence base is stronger than for many other herbal remedies, but not yet sufficient for strong clinical recommendations.
