Evidence supporting the use of: Cistanche
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cistanche, a parasitic herb used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of being prescribed for various ailments, primarily for its effects on kidney health, sexual function, and fatigue. Its use in supporting mood and treating depression is rooted more in traditional practice than in robust scientific research. In TCM, cistanche is believed to "tonify the kidney yang," which is sometimes linked to vitality and emotional well-being. As such, it has been used as an adaptogen, aiming to help the body cope with stress and restore balance. While animal studies have suggested potential neuroprotective and neurotrophic effects of cistanche extracts—such as increased levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and modulation of neurotransmitter systems—the direct application of these findings to clinical depression in humans is limited. Some preclinical research indicates that cistanche may have mild antidepressant-like effects in rodents, possibly through anti-inflammatory mechanisms and regulation of monoamine neurotransmitters. However, clinical trials in human populations with depression are lacking, and most available evidence is anecdotal or based on traditional formulations rather than isolated cistanche extracts. In summary, while cistanche is traditionally used for mood-related issues in TCM and there is preliminary preclinical evidence supporting neuroprotective actions, there is insufficient high-quality scientific validation for its use specifically in treating depression. Its use for this purpose remains primarily traditional, with limited scientific support.
