Evidence supporting the use of: Sichuan Fritillary
For the health condition: Denture Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sichuan Fritillary (Fritillaria cirrhosa), known as "Chuan Bei Mu" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is primarily used for its expectorant and antitussive properties in the management of coughs and lung-related conditions. There is some traditional use in TCM for addressing "heat toxins" and swelling, and occasionally for sores in the mouth and throat, which may be extrapolated to oral ulcerations or sores from dentures. However, the historical documentation for its specific use in treating denture sores is sparse and not directly referenced in classical materia medica texts. Rather, its inclusion in formulas for oral ulcers or mouth sores is based on the broader TCM theory of clearing heat and reducing inflammation or swelling, which could theoretically extend to traumatic denture sores.
There is no robust modern scientific evidence demonstrating the efficacy of Sichuan Fritillary specifically for denture sores. Clinical studies and pharmacological research overwhelmingly focus on its effects on respiratory conditions. Therefore, its use in this context is justified mainly by traditional practice, and the quality of evidence supporting such use is weak, meriting a low evidence rating.
