Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Aloe vera is used to support and treat denture sores based on both its traditional use in oral care and an increasing body of scientific evidence. Aloe vera gel contains compounds such as polysaccharides and glycoproteins, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and wound-healing properties. These properties are particularly beneficial for managing oral mucosal lesions, including those caused by ill-fitting dentures. Several studies have evaluated the effectiveness of aloe vera in treating oral mucosal wounds. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in the "Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine" in 2012 found that topical application of aloe vera gel significantly reduced pain and accelerated the healing of oral mucosal ulcers. Another clinical study published in "Gerodontology" in 2014 showed that aloe vera gel, applied to denture-induced stomatitis and sores, led to a notable improvement in symptoms compared to placebo. The soothing and cooling effect of aloe vera also provides symptomatic relief from irritation. While more large-scale studies would strengthen the evidence base, current research supports the adjunctive use of aloe vera for denture sores, especially given its low risk for adverse effects and its ease of topical application. Thus, aloe vera’s use for denture sores is justified by both scientific validation and tradition, with a moderate evidence rating reflecting promising but not definitive support.
