Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) is a well-known herb in Ayurvedic medicine that has traditionally been used as a brain tonic and for supporting memory and cognitive function. Its use for dementia is primarily rooted in this traditional context, where it is believed to enhance intellect ("medhya") and calm the mind. Ancient Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita mention Shankhpushpi as a remedy for various mental disorders, including forgetfulness and loss of concentration, both of which are symptoms commonly associated with dementia.

Modern scientific validation of Shankhpushpi for dementia is limited. Some preclinical studies have shown that extracts of Shankhpushpi possess neuroprotective and antioxidant properties, and may improve learning and memory in animal models. For example, studies in rodents have demonstrated enhanced memory retention and reduced amnesia when treated with Shankhpushpi extracts. However, there are no high-quality clinical trials in humans specifically evaluating its efficacy in dementia. The existing evidence is thus preliminary and mainly derived from traditional use and small-scale experimental models, rather than large, well-controlled human studies.

In summary, while Shankhpushpi is widely used in traditional Indian medicine for cognitive support and has some promising preclinical findings, robust clinical evidence for its effectiveness in treating or supporting dementia is lacking at present.
