Evidence supporting the use of: Polygala
For the health condition: Dementia
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Polygala, particularly Polygala tenuifolia (commonly known as Yuan Zhi in traditional Chinese medicine), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practice for supporting cognitive function, calming the mind, and addressing symptoms related to memory loss and dementia. Its use is primarily based on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) texts, where it is described as a "Shen tonic"—a herb that nourishes the spirit, clears phlegm, and opens the orifices of the heart, which in TCM theory is related to memory and cognitive clarity.
Modern scientific research on Polygala’s efficacy in dementia is limited, though some preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) suggest neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as possible enhancement of neuroplasticity and acetylcholine release. However, high-quality human clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence is not robust enough to be considered scientifically validated at this time. As such, its use for dementia is justified primarily by traditional use rather than strong scientific validation.
In summary, while Polygala continues to be included in herbal formulas for cognitive support in traditional medicine, there is only modest preclinical support and insufficient clinical evidence to strongly endorse its use for dementia in evidence-based medicine.
