Luteolin is a naturally occurring flavonoid found in various fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. Its potential use in supporting or treating dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease, is driven by preclinical and some early clinical evidence. Research has shown that luteolin possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective properties, which are relevant to the pathophysiology of dementia. In animal models, luteolin has been observed to reduce neuroinflammation, decrease amyloid-beta aggregation (a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease), and improve cognitive performance. These effects are believed to be mediated through inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suppression of microglial activation, and protection against oxidative stress in neuronal cells.

Human evidence, however, is limited. Most of the data comes from in vitro studies and animal experiments, with only a few small-scale clinical trials or observational studies examining its effects in humans with cognitive decline or dementia. While the mechanistic rationale is strong and preclinical results are promising, there is insufficient robust clinical evidence to recommend luteolin as a treatment for dementia. Thus, the use of luteolin is mainly justified by scientific exploration rather than longstanding traditional use or strong clinical validation. Further well-designed human studies are necessary to confirm its efficacy and safety in the context of dementia.
