Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo flavones, primarily derived from the leaves of Ginkgo biloba, are used in the management of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease. The use of Ginkgo in traditional Chinese medicine dates back centuries, but its application for dementia has been driven by more recent scientific investigation. Multiple randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have evaluated standardized Ginkgo extracts (notably EGb 761, containing 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones) for cognitive decline.

Some studies show that Ginkgo may modestly improve cognitive function, activities of daily living, and global clinical impression in patients with mild to moderate dementia, with effects comparable to some cholinesterase inhibitors. A 2016 Cochrane review concluded that Ginkgo biloba appears to be safe and may have positive effects on cognition and daily functioning, though the size of the effect is small and clinical relevance is debated. However, other studies have failed to show significant benefits, and methodological differences make comparisons challenging. Guidelines from entities like the American Academy of Neurology acknowledge some evidence but stop short of strong recommendations.

In summary, Ginkgo flavones are supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence for use in dementia, with a generally favorable safety profile, but the clinical significance remains uncertain and it should not replace standard therapies.
