Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides are the main active constituents in standardized extracts of Ginkgo biloba, a herbal medicine widely studied for cognitive impairment and dementia, particularly Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. The use of Ginkgo in dementia is primarily justified by scientific investigation, although it also has a long traditional history for memory support in Chinese medicine. Randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that standardized Ginkgo extracts (usually containing 24% flavone glycosides) may offer modest benefits in improving or stabilizing cognitive function, activities of daily living, and neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with mild to moderate dementia, compared to placebo. However, the effect sizes are generally small, and studies are mixed, with some showing little or no benefit. Guidelines from organizations such as the American Academy of Neurology note that Ginkgo biloba extract is “possibly effective” for dementia, but also highlight the heterogeneity and limitations of the evidence, including variable study quality and concerns about publication bias.

The proposed mechanisms for Ginkgo's effects include antioxidant activity, improved cerebral blood flow, and modulation of neurotransmitter systems. While some clinical studies indicate statistically significant improvements, there is insufficient evidence to recommend Ginkgo as a replacement for standard pharmacological therapies. Overall, Ginkgo Flavone Glycosides are used for dementia primarily based on moderate scientific evidence, warranting a mid-range evidence score.
