Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

White Nettle (Lamium album), also known as dead-nettle, has a long history of use in European traditional herbal medicine. It has been employed as a tonic to "strengthen" the body, particularly in cases of general debility or weakness, especially following illness or in the context of convalescence. The traditional rationale for its use in debility is largely based on its astringent and mildly stimulating properties, as well as its content of flavonoids, tannins, and mucilage, which are thought to provide a nutritive and restorative effect. Historical herbal texts, such as those by Culpeper and in various European ethnobotanical sources, describe infusions of the aerial parts as supportive for those feeling weak or exhausted.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically investigating the efficacy of White Nettle for debility in modern clinical settings. Most available scientific literature on Lamium album focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, with little to no direct evidence supporting its use for general debility or fatigue. As such, while there is a well-documented tradition of its use for this purpose, evidence from controlled clinical trials is lacking. The evidence rating of 2 reflects the consistent traditional use, but absence of direct scientific validation.
