Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chlorophytum, particularly Chlorophytum borivilianum (commonly known as Safed Musli), has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine as a general health tonic and rejuvenator, often prescribed for conditions described as "debility" or general weakness. Traditional practitioners consider it an adaptogen and restorative, believed to improve vitality, stamina, and immune function. The roots are most commonly used, sometimes in combination with other herbs, to address physical weakness, fatigue, and loss of strength, especially following illness or in the context of age-related decline.
However, direct scientific validation for its effectiveness specifically in treating "debility" is limited. Some preclinical and animal studies suggest that extracts of Chlorophytum borivilianum may enhance physical endurance and exhibit antioxidant properties, which could plausibly relate to effects on energy and strength. There are a few small-scale human studies, often focused on related conditions like male sexual health or general tonic effects, but these are neither extensive nor robust enough to strongly support its use for debility. As such, the primary justification remains traditional, with only modest scientific support at this time.
