For the health condition: Debility
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Abalone, a type of marine mollusk, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and some other East Asian practices for centuries. In these systems, abalone shell (Haliotis species) is known as "Shi Jue Ming" and is primarily valued for its supposed effects on the liver, vision, and as a calming agent. Its use for "debility"—a general term indicating weakness or a decline in physical strength—stems from the belief that abalone can nourish the yin, support vital energy (qi), and provide minerals such as calcium and magnesium. These properties are thought, within TCM frameworks, to help restore balance and improve overall vitality in cases of weakness or chronic fatigue. However, scientific evidence supporting these claims is minimal. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical studies evaluating abalone or its extracts for the treatment or support of debility in humans. Most of the evidence remains anecdotal or rooted in historical practice rather than modern medical trials. While abalone is a source of nutrients, consuming it as part of a balanced diet contributes to general health, but there is no direct scientific validation for its use specifically targeting debility. As such, its use is justified by tradition rather than scientific evidence.
