Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Red Sandalwood (Pterocarpus santalinus) has traditionally been used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medicine systems for various skin and scalp conditions, including dandruff. The wood is typically ground into a powder and mixed with other ingredients to make pastes or oils applied to the scalp. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records indicate its use for cooling, soothing inflamed skin, and addressing flakiness or irritation, which are symptoms commonly associated with dandruff. The rationale for its use is largely based on its perceived anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties as described in traditional sources.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies specifically validating Red Sandalwood's efficacy for dandruff. Few laboratory studies have investigated its antimicrobial properties, and while some extracts have shown general antibacterial or antifungal activity in vitro, these results do not directly translate to clinical effectiveness against the fungi or conditions causing dandruff (such as Malassezia species). There are no published clinical trials or peer-reviewed studies demonstrating its effectiveness for treating dandruff in humans. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence supporting Red Sandalwood for dandruff is minimal.
