Indian Redwood (Biancaea sappan, formerly known as Caesalpinia sappan), referred to as "Patanga" in Ayurveda, has been traditionally used in Indian medicine for various skin conditions, including dandruff. The primary justification for its use comes from classical Ayurvedic texts that cite its properties as "rakta shodhaka" (blood purifier) and its utility in treating skin disorders, which are often linked to imbalances believed to cause symptoms like dandruff (scalp flaking, itching). Indian Redwood is valued for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and astringent properties, which may help in soothing irritated scalp and reducing microbial load associated with dandruff. However, direct scientific studies evaluating the efficacy of Indian Redwood specifically for dandruff are scarce. While some laboratory research demonstrates that extracts from Indian Redwood possess broad-spectrum antibacterial and antifungal activity, there is limited clinical evidence directly linking these effects to dandruff treatment in humans. Most modern formulations that include Indian Redwood rely on its traditional reputation and in vitro antimicrobial activities, rather than robust clinical trials. Therefore, while there is a clear tradition of its use for dandruff and related scalp conditions in Ayurveda, the scientific evidence remains preliminary and indirect.
