Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Homalomena is a genus of plants used in various traditional medicine systems across Asia, particularly in countries such as China, India, and Indonesia. Its use for skin and scalp conditions, including dandruff, is primarily rooted in folk and Ayurvedic practices rather than in scientific research. Traditional healers may recommend Homalomena for its purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which are believed to aid in alleviating itching and flaking associated with dandruff. However, there is a lack of robust clinical studies or published scientific literature directly evaluating the efficacy of Homalomena extracts or preparations against dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) in humans. Most of the available information is anecdotal or derived from ethnobotanical surveys. While some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial compounds in certain Homalomena species, these findings have not been translated into clinical evidence for dandruff treatment. Therefore, the support for using Homalomena against dandruff remains largely traditional, and the evidence strength is weak (rated 1), with no clear scientific validation at this time.
