Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Atlantic Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) has traditionally been used in various folk medicine systems, including those in North Africa and the Middle East, for a range of skin and scalp conditions. Its essential oil is known for its antiseptic, antifungal, and astringent properties, which has led to its inclusion in traditional remedies for dandruff and other scalp irritations. However, the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness for treating dandruff specifically is minimal. Most references are anecdotal or based on its general antimicrobial activity, rather than targeted clinical research on dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis). A handful of in vitro studies indicate that cedarwood oil, which can include oils from Cedrus atlantica, has some antifungal activity against organisms like Malassezia, the yeast associated with dandruff. Despite this, there are no well-designed clinical trials confirming its efficacy for this condition. As such, while the use of Atlantic Cedar in dandruff remedies is justified by tradition and some preliminary pharmacological rationale, it lacks robust scientific validation.
