Evidence supporting the use of: Curcuma wenyujin
For the health condition: Cramps (menstrual)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Curcuma wenyujin, a species of the turmeric family, has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) to support gynecological health, particularly for menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea (menstrual cramps). In TCM, it is known as "wenyujin" and is valued for its purported ability to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, and alleviate pain. Classic medical texts and herbal compendiums reference its use in formulas aimed at addressing "blood stasis" syndromes, which are often linked to painful menstrual conditions. However, the scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating menstrual cramps is limited. While some laboratory and animal studies have explored anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties of Curcuma species, including Curcuma wenyujin, there is a lack of rigorous clinical trials specifically evaluating its efficacy for menstrual pain in humans. Most available data are extrapolated from related Curcuma species (such as Curcuma longa, or turmeric) or from general observations of its effects on blood flow and inflammation. As such, its use for menstrual cramps is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than robust scientific validation. Further research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness for this indication.
