Peppermint oil has a scientifically supported use for alleviating certain types of cramps and spasms, particularly those related to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The main active component in peppermint oil, menthol, has antispasmodic properties. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles of the GI tract through calcium channel blockade, which can help relieve symptoms like abdominal pain, cramping, and spasms.
