Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine. Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of purposes, primarily as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, particularly for joint pain and headaches. Its use for cramps and spasms, however, is less prominent but still present in some herbal traditions, where it is sometimes included in formulations for digestive discomfort or mild muscle cramps due to its mild antispasmodic and soothing effects on the gastrointestinal tract.

Scientific evidence supporting Meadowsweet specifically for the treatment of cramps and spasms is very limited. Meadowsweet contains salicylates (aspirin-like compounds), tannins, and flavonoids, which may contribute to its general soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, but direct antispasmodic activity has not been well established in clinical or preclinical trials. Most of the references to its use for cramps or spasms are anecdotal or based on traditional herbal compendia rather than modern scientific research. Therefore, its use for this purpose is considered primarily traditional, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness is weak.
