Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Nymphaea nouchali, commonly known as blue water lily or star lotus, is used in various traditional medicine systems in South and Southeast Asia. In Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine, different parts of the plant have been employed for a variety of ailments, including coughs described as spastic or dry. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys mention its use as a demulcent and antitussive, thought to soothe irritated mucous membranes and reduce cough reflex. However, these uses are largely based on historical practice rather than rigorous scientific study.

There is a lack of substantial pharmacological research specifically examining the efficacy of Nymphaea nouchali for spastic cough. While some in vitro and animal studies have explored the plant's general anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, direct evidence supporting antitussive (cough-suppressing) effects is minimal or absent in the published scientific literature. Thus, the evidence for its use in treating cough remains rooted in tradition, with little validation from clinical trials or modern studies. The rating of 1 reflects the presence of traditional use but very limited scientific support.
