Evidence supporting the use of: Loblolly pine
For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) has a history of traditional use among Native American and folk medicine practitioners in the southeastern United States. Preparations made from the needles, bark, or resin of various pine species, including loblolly pine, have been used to treat respiratory complaints such as coughs, colds, and congestion. The main rationale behind these uses is the aromatic and resinous nature of pine, which was thought to help soothe irritated airways and act as an expectorant. However, most references to pine in this context do not specifically isolate loblolly pine from other pine species, and the documentation is often anecdotal or based on general pine usage. There are no well-designed clinical studies or robust pharmacological investigations specifically supporting the efficacy of loblolly pine for spastic cough. As such, while there is some traditional precedent for its use, the evidence is weak and not specific, and there is little to no scientific validation for its use in this context.
