Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lindera aggregata, known as Wu Yao in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a documented historical use for treating various respiratory conditions, including cough—especially coughs characterized by spasms or associated with cold and qi stagnation. In TCM, Wu Yao is believed to possess warming and qi-regulating properties, which are thought to help relieve coughs by dispersing cold and alleviating constraint in the chest and lungs. However, the classical use is more commonly focused on abdominal pain, urinary disorders, and dispersing cold from the body. Its application for cough, especially spastic cough, is less emphasized but does appear in some traditional formulas, often in combination with other herbs. Modern scientific research on Lindera aggregata for cough, specifically spastic cough, is very limited. While some studies have explored its antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro and in animal models, these have not been directly linked to clinical efficacy for cough in humans. The available evidence is therefore primarily anecdotal and based on traditional usage rather than robust clinical trials. In summary, the use of Lindera aggregata for spastic cough is rooted in tradition, with some theoretical pharmacological support but minimal direct scientific validation.
