Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

The use of Ilex species (such as Ilex paraguariensis, Ilex aquifolium, etc.) for cough, particularly spastic cough, is primarily rooted in traditional medicine rather than robust scientific validation. In folk and traditional herbal medicine, certain Ilex species have been used for a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions. For example, Ilex aquifolium (English holly) leaves were used historically in European herbalism as an expectorant and for treating coughs and fevers. Similarly, Ilex paraguariensis (Yerba mate) is consumed in South America and has been used in folk medicine for its purported anti-inflammatory and stimulating effects, though not specifically or widely for cough.

However, scientific evidence supporting the use of Ilex for spastic cough is minimal. The available pharmacological studies on Ilex species largely focus on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and stimulant properties, with little direct evaluation of antitussive (cough-suppressant) activity. No high-quality clinical trials or robust preclinical studies substantiate the use of Ilex extracts for the treatment of spastic cough. As such, while there is a traditional precedent for using some Ilex species in cough remedies, evidence is weak and primarily anecdotal.
