Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dragonhead (Dracocephalum spp.), particularly Dracocephalum moldavica, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and folk medicine in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. It has been used for a variety of ailments, including as a remedy for coughs, particularly those described as spasmodic or irritating. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical surveys frequently mention its use as a tea or infusion to soothe cough and respiratory discomfort, likely due to its aromatic and possibly mild antispasmodic properties. However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this indication is minimal. There are a few preclinical studies indicating that extracts of Dracocephalum species may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies specifically examining its effects on cough (spastic or otherwise) are lacking. Therefore, the use of Dragonhead for spastic cough is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation, and the quality of supporting evidence is low.
