Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cubebs (Piper cubeba) have a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Ayurvedic and Unani systems. Historically, cubebs have been used as an expectorant and for the treatment of respiratory issues such as chronic bronchitis and cough, including spastic or irritable coughs. The traditional rationale for using cubebs is based on their pungent, warming properties, which were believed to help clear phlegm and soothe the respiratory tract. Various historical texts and herbal compendia from both the Middle East and South Asia mention cubebs as an ingredient in remedies for cough and throat irritation.

However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is limited. Modern pharmacological studies on cubebs have focused more on their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, but there is little direct clinical research evaluating their effectiveness specifically for cough, let alone spastic cough. Most of the support for cubebs in this context remains anecdotal or based on traditional usage rather than rigorous clinical trials. Therefore, while cubebs are traditionally used for cough, the evidence level for their efficacy in this specific indication is modest.
