Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Citrus nobilis, commonly known as mandarin orange, has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. Its peel, known as "Chen Pi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is widely used to treat coughs, especially those with phlegm, and is believed to help regulate qi and resolve dampness in the lungs. The use for spastic (or spasmodic) coughs is primarily based on these traditions. TCM texts and pharmacopeias describe its use in various herbal formulas intended to soothe coughs, clear phlegm, and reduce bronchial irritation. The essential oils and flavonoids in the peel are credited with expectorant and mild bronchodilatory effects according to traditional theory. However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Citrus nobilis specifically for spastic cough is limited. Some studies on related Citrus species or their phytochemicals suggest anti-inflammatory and mild antitussive properties, but direct clinical studies on Citrus nobilis for cough are lacking. Thus, its use is best characterized as traditional with low to moderate evidence (rating 2), mainly due to the absence of robust clinical trials. Its continued use is largely justified by historical and empirical practices rather than conclusive modern research.
