Cistus, a genus of flowering plants also known as rockrose, has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Mediterranean regions. Its extracts, especially from Cistus incanus and Cistus creticus, have been employed in folk remedies for a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions like coughs. The resin from Cistus, known as labdanum, was historically used in herbal teas and syrups intended to soothe irritated throats and reduce cough symptoms, including spastic (or spasmodic) coughs. However, while these traditional uses are well documented in herbal literature, there is minimal scientific research specifically validating the efficacy of Cistus for cough, especially spastic cough. Most modern studies on Cistus have focused on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, but direct clinical trials evaluating its effects on cough are lacking. Therefore, its use for cough is supported primarily by tradition, with very limited scientific evidence, and any recommendations are largely based on historical rather than clinical data.
