Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chrysanthemum (primarily referring to Chrysanthemum morifolium or C. indicum) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for various ailments, including cough, particularly coughs associated with "wind-heat" or spastic (irritative) coughs. In TCM, chrysanthemum is believed to have cooling and anti-inflammatory properties, and it is often included in herbal formulations with other herbs such as honeysuckle and mulberry leaf to alleviate symptoms of respiratory discomfort, including cough. However, while this traditional use is well documented in classical and modern TCM texts, there is limited robust scientific evidence to specifically support its efficacy for spastic cough. Some laboratory studies have shown that chrysanthemum extracts possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties, and may have mild relaxant effects on airway smooth muscle, which could theoretically contribute to cough relief. However, these findings are mostly preclinical, and there are few, if any, high-quality clinical trials directly evaluating chrysanthemum for spastic cough in humans. Thus, the rating reflects the strong traditional foundation but lack of solid scientific validation.
