Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Pine (Pinus tabuliformis and related species) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for centuries, particularly in the form of pine needles, resin, or buds, to address respiratory complaints including cough—especially those described as spasmodic or persistent. In TCM, pine products are thought to "dispel wind and cold," "transform phlegm," and ease cough due to their purported expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. Classical texts and herbal compendia, such as the Ben Cao Gang Mu (Compendium of Materia Medica), include references to pine needles and resin for cough management. However, the evidence remains largely anecdotal and based on longstanding empirical use rather than formal clinical research. Modern pharmacological studies on pine extracts have suggested possible anti-inflammatory and bronchodilatory effects, but direct clinical trials for spastic cough are lacking or inconclusive. Thus, while Chinese Pine's use for spastic cough is justified by tradition and there is some preliminary scientific rationale, robust scientific validation is absent and the practice is not widely endorsed by contemporary evidence-based medicine.
