Arisaema (genus including species such as Arisaema triphyllum and Arisaema erubescens) is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and some other herbal systems to support the treatment of spastic coughs, including those with phlegm. In TCM, processed Arisaema (commonly referred to as "Tian Nan Xing") is believed to "transform phlegm" and "dispel wind," which is relevant to coughs characterized by spasms and thick sputum. Classical TCM texts, such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and subsequent materia medica, describe its use for phlegm disorders associated with cough, convulsions, and even epilepsy. The raw plant is toxic, but proper processing is believed to render it safe for medicinal use.

Despite its long history of use, there is limited scientific research to confirm its efficacy or safety for spastic cough. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties for extracts of Arisaema species, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to human clinical outcomes in cough. No high-quality clinical trials exist to validate its effectiveness or safety specifically for spastic cough in humans. Therefore, its use is primarily justified by traditional practice rather than scientific validation.
