For the health condition: Cough (spastic)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Amomum species (such as Amomum villosum and Amomum kravanh, often collectively referred to as "Amomum" or "Sha Ren" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) have a long history of use in traditional medicinal systems, especially within Chinese and Southeast Asian herbalism. In these traditions, Amomum is primarily valued for its aromatic, carminative, and digestive properties, and is commonly used to address issues like indigestion, nausea, and vomiting. However, in some traditional texts and formulations, Amomum has been included in multi-herb blends intended for respiratory complaints, including coughs characterized by spasmodic or “stubborn” qualities. Its use for cough (spastic) is not as prominent as for digestive conditions, but it is sometimes mentioned in the context of supporting the movement of Qi and dispelling phlegm, which may indirectly benefit cough symptoms in the traditional framework.
Scientifically, there is very limited direct evidence supporting Amomum for the treatment of cough, particularly spastic cough. Most of the available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and gastrointestinal effects. There are no robust clinical trials or animal studies that specifically evaluate its efficacy against cough or spastic cough. Therefore, while there is a minor traditional precedent for its use in some herbal cough remedies, the overall support is weak, and scientific validation is lacking.
