Evidence supporting the use of: Wax Gourd
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Wax Gourd (Benincasa hispida), also known as ash gourd or winter melon, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these traditions, Wax Gourd is believed to possess cooling and moistening properties. It has been used to soothe the respiratory tract, reduce internal heat, and alleviate symptoms associated with coughs and other respiratory issues. Texts from Ayurveda mention its juice or decoction being used for dry cough and throat irritation, often in combination with honey or other herbs. In TCM, it is sometimes recommended for clearing phlegm and moistening the lungs. However, while the traditional use is well-documented, the scientific evidence supporting Wax Gourd's efficacy in treating cough is limited. There are very few clinical studies evaluating its effectiveness for cough relief. Some laboratory research has indicated that Wax Gourd contains bioactive compounds with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically contribute to soothing irritated airways, but these findings have not been directly linked to cough relief in humans. Thus, while the use of Wax Gourd for cough is rooted in tradition and some plausible pharmacological rationale exists, robust scientific validation is lacking.
