Evidence supporting the use of: Parsley
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Parsley (Petroselinum crispum) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, including some references to its use for respiratory complaints such as cough. In folk medicine, parsley tea or syrup has sometimes been administered to soothe coughs and relieve congestion, likely due to its volatile oils (such as apiol and myristicin), mild expectorant properties, and its content of vitamin C and flavonoids. However, compared to more well-established cough remedies like thyme, licorice, or marshmallow root, parsley’s use for cough is less prominent and less systematically documented.
There is limited scientific research specifically investigating parsley’s efficacy in treating or alleviating cough. Some pharmacological studies indicate that parsley extracts possess mild anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically support respiratory health and comfort. Yet, direct clinical trials examining parsley for cough relief are lacking. The evidence supporting its use in this context comes mostly from longstanding traditional practices rather than rigorous scientific validation. Therefore, while parsley has been traditionally used for a variety of ailments including cough, modern clinical evidence remains insufficient, and parsley should not be considered a primary or standalone remedy for this condition.
