Nymphaea nouchali, commonly known as the blue lotus or star lotus, is traditionally used in various systems of traditional medicine, such as Ayurveda and Siddha, particularly in South Asia. Its use for cough and other respiratory conditions is documented in traditional texts where parts of the plant—including its flowers and rhizomes—are utilized to prepare decoctions or syrups believed to soothe the throat and reduce cough symptoms. However, the evidence for its effectiveness largely stems from ethnobotanical surveys and historical references rather than rigorous scientific studies. There are limited pharmacological investigations on Nymphaea nouchali's antitussive (cough-suppressing) properties, and no substantial clinical trials support its efficacy for cough treatment.
