The plant’s needles and young shoots have been used to prepare teas, syrups, and inhalations. Its essential oil, known as "oleum pini pumilionis," is rich in volatile compounds such as alpha- and beta-pinene, which impart a characteristic pine scent and have mild expectorant properties. Folk medicine references from the 19th and early 20th centuries mention its use in baths and inhalations aimed at easing cough and congestion. However, scientific studies specifically evaluating the effectiveness of Mugo Pine for cough are limited, and most evidence is anecdotal or based on its similarity to other pine species used for respiratory support.
