Evidence supporting the use of: Dragonhead
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Dragonhead, referring to the genus Dracocephalum (commonly Dracocephalum moldavica or "Moldavian balm"), has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia and Eastern Europe, for a variety of ailments, including coughs and respiratory conditions. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that infusions or decoctions of the plant have been administered as a soothing remedy for cough, sore throat, and mild bronchial complaints. The rationale in traditional practice is often linked to its aromatic properties and perceived anti-inflammatory or expectorant effects. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. There are few modern pharmacological studies specifically examining the effects of Dragonhead on cough or respiratory symptoms. A handful of laboratory studies have identified the presence of flavonoids and essential oils in the plant, which may have mild anti-inflammatory or antimicrobial properties, but these have not been directly linked to clinical efficacy in treating cough. Therefore, its use for cough is primarily rooted in traditional herbal medicine, and contemporary evidence supporting its effectiveness remains weak.
