Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese salvia root
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese salvia root, also known as Salvia miltiorrhiza or Danshen, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its primary traditional indications are for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, and treating cardiovascular conditions. While Danshen is not a classic herb for cough in the major TCM formulas, it has been used in some traditional contexts to address respiratory issues, especially when cough is believed to be due to blood stasis or related syndromes. However, these uses are relatively minor compared to its main cardiovascular applications.
There is very limited scientific evidence directly supporting the use of Chinese salvia root for treating cough. Most research focuses on its cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest anti-inflammatory activity, which could theoretically contribute to alleviating cough if inflammation is involved, but no robust clinical trials or systematic reviews confirm its efficacy for this specific symptom. Therefore, its use for cough is based primarily on traditional practices and theoretical applications within TCM, rather than on strong scientific validation. The overall evidence supporting its use for cough is weak and mostly anecdotal.
