Celosia, particularly Celosia argentea, has a long-standing history in traditional medicine systems, especially in Asia and Africa. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Celosia seeds (known as "Qing Xiang Zi") are used for their purported properties to "clear heat" and "drain fire," and are occasionally included in formulations for respiratory conditions, which may include coughs. Similarly, in certain African traditional practices, various parts of the Celosia plant are used in decoctions or infusions to help relieve cough and other respiratory symptoms.

However, scientific validation for its efficacy specifically against cough is limited. While some laboratory studies have evaluated Celosia extracts for anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically benefit cough-related conditions, there is a lack of well-conducted clinical trials or direct pharmacological studies confirming its effectiveness for this indication. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical surveys rather than rigorous research. As such, the use of Celosia for cough is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from modern science.
